Q:
What is the difference between this class and a "writers'
group"?
A: The biggest difference
is that this group is facilitated by a professional writer and
teacher. Each week, we focus on a specific topic for class discussion,
using individual and group exercises to help you become a better
writer.
Q: Will there be assignments between classes?
A: Your principal assignment
will be to get some writing done on the project of your choice!
You will also be asked to do some reading in preparation for each
class.
Q: What kind of reading will we be asked
to do?
A: As a group, we will
read one short story or a short piece of narrative non-fiction
each week. These pieces will be incorporated into our class discussions.
(Materials provided.)
Q: Is this class designed for fiction writers
or writers of non-fiction?
A:
The goal of the series is to inspire and support all narrative
work—fiction and non-fiction.
Q: Will I have to share my work in class?
A: You'll have an opportunity
to share your work with the class, but this will not be a requirement.
For those of you who are in recovery from a particularly harsh
writers' workshop or negative writing group experience, let me
assure you that my role will be to create a safe and supportive
atmosphere should you decide to share your work.
Q: Will you evaluate student manuscripts?
A:
You will receive feedback on your class work, but time will not
allow for one-on-one manuscript consultations. If you're further
along in your writing work, and are interested in private coaching
or a manuscript review, please e-mail
Kate.
